It may be too early for the blame game, but having observed the first six weeks of the 2013/14 Barclays Premier league, one cannot help but ask questions about the potentials of the defending champions. With just 7 points from possible 18, the Red Devils are 8 points behind the table toppers and presently lie 12th on the log. A look at the European elite leagues shows United as the only defending champion with such low showing.
It could be argued that Manchester United have once plied this route before and ended up winning the league but it must also be stated that such claim was made possible by the arguably the greatest manager of the beautiful game. This present United side seems to lack what it takes to find their way to the top of the table this season due to some glaring deficiencies in the team.
Firstly, this united team has displayed a high level of inconsistency which makes them far away from even the shadows of the United the Old Trafford faithful are used to know. From the height of their opening day victory at the Liberty stadium over Swansea, to the ultimate low of their home defeat to Westbrom at the weekend, this Manchester United team has been far from convincing.
Being 12th on the log at after 6 rounds of matches will not be the major concern for a diehard United fan, but the on-field performance of the team which gives less hope for revival. Excluding the brilliance of Rooney and RVP’s magic at times, the Red Devils lack creativity and bite in the middle of the park and their defense leaves nothing to be desired; Amalfitano’s stroll through their defense for Westbrom’s opener at the weekend sums it all.
