OBJ’s LETTER: A CALL FOR A COUP – Afenifere

OBJ’s LETTERPan-Yoruba socio-cultural group, Afenifere, on Monday said that former President Olusegun Obasanjo’s December 2 letter to President Goodluck Jonathan was similar to his previous criticisms of some past administrations, which had not done the country any good.

In an unprecedented move, the group also raised the alarm over alleged moves to truncate the proposed National Conference by staging a coup against Jonathan’s administration.

In a statement by its National Publicity Secretary, Yinka Odumakin, Afenifere explained that Obasanjo’s previous intervention in Nigeria’s national affairs via his letters had always been followed by a forceful change of government.

Afenifere called on the political class not to “enable” generals, “who have not been known to act in the collective interest in their infamous careers”.

The group highlighted how past governments, from the regimes of late Gen. Murtala Muhammed, Alhaji Shehu Shagari and Gen. Ibrahim Babangida were changed following criticisms in which Obasanjo had allegedly played a prominent role.

The group likened Obasanjo’s recent 18-page letter to a document allegedly circulated in January 1976 during Muhammed’s regime in which Obasanjo was the deputy. The regime later led in a bloody coup and the baton of leadership fell on Obasanjo, who curiously was not consumed by the coup.

Mmmm. Do you share Afenifere’s view?
