Nigeria’s National Assembly reconvenes plenary

The National Assembly in Nigeria has reconvened amidst jubilation by lawmakers of the All Progressives Congress, APC in both the senate and the House of representatives,VON reports.
The caucus of the APC in both the senate and the house of representatives were seen in small groups discussing the elections.
 Reacting to their success in an interview, Senator Barnabas Gemade, PDP Benue North who defected to the All Progressives Congress, APC and defeated the incumbent governor of Benue State, Mr. Gabriel Suswam, in the Benue North senatorial election said the APC victory at the polls was well deserved.
“Our victory at the polls was over due and well deserved. But there is a lot of work to be done. We must learn from the mistakes of the PDP and work very hard for to avoid them”, he opined.
 
Thriving Democracy
Earlier at plenary, the Senate President, David Mark, had commended Nigerians for their comportment before, during and after the general election.
“I would like to commend Nigerians for their comportment before, during and after the. elections. By this action, we have proved to the world that Nigeria has laid a solid foundation for democracy to thrive”, he started.
He equally commended Professor Attahiru Jega, and the Independent National National Electoral Commission, INEC for the successes in the 2015 general election.
“The introduction of the Card Readers added value to the electoral process. I therefore urge Nigerians to accept and indeed imbibe the new voting technology. The Card Readers have proved to be effective, efficient, and result oriented. We should embrace this technology. However, INEC must note the areas of its shortcomings based on field reportss nationwide and continue to make improvements”, he continued.
Congratulations
The Nigerian Senate President congratulated his colleagues in both the Senate and the House of Representatives who won their elections to return to the National Assembly.

“We are elected on different political platforms to represent our constituents, but in the National Assembly we are united by the common goal to legislate for the good governance, peace and unity of Nigeria. I also felicitate with our other compatriots who will be coming to the National Assembly in the next dispensation”, he said.
Senator David Mark also congratulated his fellow lawmakers who won elections as chief executives of state governments, four of whom are from the senate and three from the house of representatives,  urging them to continue to exhibit the highest sense of duty and responsibility anchored on transparency, accountability and honesty which he said they had exhibited over the years.
“These Governors-Elect are our ambassadors in their respective states”, he concluded.
The Senate President also commended Senators Ibikunle Amosun and Abiola Ajimobi, the ‘re-elected governors in Ogun and Oyo states saying their ‘re-election was a demonstration of their grievances, hard work and diligence.
He appealed to the lawmakers to utilize the time left of their tenure to conclude their outstanding legislative calendar so that the incoming parliament would be given a solid foundation to build upon in the service of the nation.
