Nigeria Remains 47th In FIFA Rankings

Nigeria remains at 47th, as it was last month, in the latest FIFA rankings released on Thursday by the world football governing body, The additional 10 points garnered by the team, raising it to 626 mattered little as the team only moved up from being eighth in Africa to the seventh position.

Despite dropping down a spot to 24th place, Ivory Coast remains the highest ranked African country with 839 points. While Algeria and Egypt make up the top three in Africa as they are placed 25th and 26th respectively on the world stage. Egypt moved up 12 places, but Cape Verde lost six places to stay at 33rd in the world and fourth in Africa.

Ghana (35) and Tunisia (44) occupy fifth and sixth places on the continent, Cameroon (50), Guinea (53) and Mali (56) complete the African top 10, At the top of the rankings, Spain, Germany, Argentina, Portugal and Colombia held on to their top five spots respectively.

Blatter-360x225-300x187Close behind them are Uruguay (6th, up 1) and Switzerland (7th, down 1), while Belgium (10th, up 1) have jumped up into the top ten at the expense of the Netherlands (11th, down 1). Meanwhile England (12th, up 3) and Russia (19th, up 3) have made good progress in the top 20.

FIFA said of the 67 matches taken into account, 57 were friendlies. The other ten games were AFC Asian Cup qualifiers, which bring the total number of matches evaluated so far this year to 122.
