The Rule of Law Accountability Advocacy Centre (RULAAC), a civil rights group, wants the Inspector-General of police (I-GP) to investigate five policemen attached to a popular musician in Lagos.

The Executive Director of RULAAC, Mr Okechukwu Nwanguma, made the call in a statement in Lagos on Tuesday.

Nwanguma said the group condemned the unwarranted shooting of innocent persons by the said policemen at Obi Cubana’s Club, Victoria Island, Lagos.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that on Sunday, the Police spokesman, CSP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, announced the arrest of the five policemen attached to Burna Boy, a Nigerian musician, over the alleged shooting at the club.

“The Police personnel identified in the shooting incident at Club Cubana in Victoria Island, Lagos on Wednesday, June 8, 2022, have been taken into custody and are being investigated for their involvement.

“The Inspector-General of Police, I-GP Usman Baba, who described the circumstances surrounding the incident as unbelievable, has however, condemned, in the strongest terms, the unfortunate incident.

“Consequently, the I-GP has directed the Commissioner of Police, Lagos State, CP Abiodun Alabi, to carry out a thorough investigation into the matter and forward his report as urgently as possible for further action,” Adejobi said.

Nwanguma described the incident as scandalous and embarrassing.

“In spite of repeated directives by successive I-GPs to the contrary, police authorities have continued to assign police officers to private individuals, turning police officers into private guards for wealthy individuals.’’

“We want to know who assigned five police officers to one man, the justification for that assignment and for the shooting.

“What does one man need five police officers for? What public duty was he attending? Who assigned or authorised the assignment of those officers to one private individual?

“The arrest and detention of the five policemen is not enough. The I-GP should order a full investigation into this act,’’ he said.
