The 2014 Commonwealth games ended on Sunday night with team Nigeria finishing eight on the overall medals table. A string of silver medals on the penultimate day of the competition ensured Nigeria finished with 11 gold, 11 silver and 14 bronze medals.
Though team Nigeria failed to better the fit attained in Victoria Canada in 1994 where the team won 11 gold, 13 silver and 13 bronze medals, there’s still a reason to celebrate, as Blessing Okagbare set a new Games Record in the 100m Women’ s event, and went on to complete a sprint double with victory in the 200m.
England led the overall medals table with 58 gold, Australia came second with 49 gold, Canada third with 32, while host country Scotland came forth with 19 gold medals.
South Africa led the Africa medals table with 13 gold in seventh position, Nigeria with 11 gold in eight, Kenya with 10 gold in 9th, Cameroon with 1 gold in seventeenth, and Uganda also with 1 gold in eighteenth position.
Athletes from 71 nations participated in 17 sports during the 12- days’ event.
