Bulgarian customs officers said that they have confiscated around 400 kilograms of heroin from Iran in a Turkish lorry at the EU’s external border with Turkey.

The drugs, worth the equivalent of €8.5 million ($9.06 million) and destined for an EU country, was hidden in mattresses, the main customs office in Sofia announced on Saturday, without naming the EU state.

The heroin was earlier found on April 10, during a customs check at the Kapitan Andreevo border crossing, while a 63-year-old Turkish driver was detained.

Recently in March, Bulgarian customs officers had discovered some 170 kilograms of cocaine among bananas from Ecuador at the harbour of the Black Sea city of Burgas.

The ship carrying the bananas had reportedly travelled from Ecuador to Bulgaria via Panama, Malta and Italy.
