Hundreds of flights at Frankfurt Airport in Germany were cancelled on Thursday due to winter storm that forced the airport to briefly suspend take-offs and landings.

More than 300 of about 1,000 scheduled flights for Thursday at Frankfurt Airport were cancelled, a spokeswoman for airport operator, Fraport, said on Thursday morning.

Flights are taking off and landing at the airport, but air traffic was still recovering from a storm that brought ice, freezing rain and snow to much of western and southern Germany.

It was unclear if additional flights might be cancelled over the course of Thursday.

The airport spokeswoman urged passengers to check the status of their flights online before travelling to the airport.

The Frankfurt Airport is Germany’s largest and most important aviation hub, and is among the busiest airports in Europe.

On Wednesday, 570 of the 1,047 scheduled arrivals and departures were cancelled. More than 300 of the 1,000 flights scheduled for Thursday have also been grounded.

Although planes can be de-iced, they risk icing up again while taxiing along the runway, the airport said.

“Due to the forecasted weather conditions, flight disruptions and cancellations will occur on 17 January at Frankfurt airport. Weather-related flight disruptions are also expected for 18 January,” a spokesperson said.

Travellers are asked not to come to the airport if their flights are cancelled.

Munich airport is also affected, with 254 flights grounded.
