Worsening hunger crises coming – Aid agencies warn

Two German aid organisations have warned of worsening hunger crises in the wake of the war in Ukraine.

Welthungerhilfe and the children’s relief organisation Terre des Hommes called for urgent action at a joint presentation in Berlin on Thursday.

The organisations said governments need to react to what they called “the fatal interplay” of wars, the consequences of the COVID-19 pandemic, the effects of climate change and a worsening hunger catastrophe.

“International community is facing a global systemic crisis.

“The German government should use this year’s G7 presidency to commit to binding initiatives on global food security together with its partners, the organisations added.

“We must not allow a repeat of the hunger crisis of 2007/2008, when there were almost one billion people starving in the world,” said Mathias Mogge of Welthungerhilfe.

Welthungerhilfe said that global food security should be a top political priority.

It added that German government, together with the other G7 countries, must provide an additional 14 billion U.S. dollars per year for food security in order to defeat global hunger.
