Manchester United have been dealt a huge blow ahead of their Champions League Quarter Final second leg match against Bayern Munich as their influential striker, Wayne Rooney has been ruled out of Saturday’s Barclays Premier League clash at Newcastle United due to a toe injury and will face a late be assessment ahead of Wednesday’s Champions League tie at the Alianz Arena.

Rooney sustained the toe injury during the second half of the 1-1 draw with Bayern and misses the St James’ Park encounter as a result. The Reds will be desperate to ensure Rooney recovers in time to board the plane to Germany in midweek.

“Wayne’s got a badly bruised toe,” David Moyes revealed to MUTV. “He picked it up in the game the other night. Whether we were going to play him or rest him, it doesn’t matter. He’s got a terrible toe and not only will it be a problem for this game, it could be a problem for the Munich game as well on Wednesday. So we need to monitor it. We’ll get him treatment all over the weekend and see if we can speed it up.”

With five goals in six games last month, the England international has been in top form but his absence may hand an opportunity to Javier Hernandez, with Danny Welbeck also an option for Moyes, as Robin van Persie is still sidelined due to a knee problem.
