President Jonathan Vows to Abide by Election Dates

The President of Nigeria, Dr. Goodluck Jonathan has reiterated his promise to maintain the dates, March 28 and April 11, 2015 for Nigeria’s General Election.

According to VON, he made the promise during a widely televised Presidential debate in Abuja.

The debate which was in two sessions featured 12 out of the 13 candidates running for the office of the President in the forthcoming elections.

The participants spoke about their plans to fight corruption and insecurity and improve the Agricultural, Oil and Educational sectors if elected.

President Goodluck Jonathan of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP promised to improve on the measures his government had already taken to fight insecurity in Nigeria.

He also promised to set up preventive measures to fight corruption.

“The preventive aspect is more potent than the enforcement, so there are three things; the prevention then strengthening the institutions, the legal process, then of course re-orienting our people,” he said.

On the part of the Candidate of the United Democratic Party, UDP Mr. Godson Okoye, he said he would fight corruption by ensuring that his government has competent leaders at all levels.

On the matter of improving the Oil Sector which is Nigeria’s major source of revenue, he said he would focus on building refineries.

“Must we build humongous refineries that will take all our money to maintain, we can build small refineries, we will group states into five or six  and tell them to build small refineries with capacity of 30,000 litres,” Okoye said.

Also on the matter of Oil, the candidate of KOWA party, Mrs Comfort Sonia said she will privatise the sector.

She promised to improve Education sector by reviewing the curriculum  of schools in order to re-orient them to educate students to be solution providers.

The Candidate of the United Progressive Party, UPP, Mr. Chekwas Okorie said he would improve the Educational Sector and also expand the Land Use Act to enable land owners gain access to necessary funds to delve into Agriculture.

Still speaking on Agriculture, the candidate of the National Conscience Party, NCP Mr. Martin Onovo said his government would review  the National Agriculture Management System.

“We have noticed a few critical things that if provided will grow agriculture by phantom leaps, one is adequate supply of fertilizer, access to land will be made easier, we must mechanise farming,” he said.

The only candidate that was absent was the candidate of the main opposition party, General Muhammadu Buhari of the All Progressives Congress.
