Nigeria’s Vice President-elect, Professor Yemi Osinbajo, says his administration will give teachers across the nation access to free tertiary programmes, Channels reports.
Addressing a gathering of members of the Nigerian Union of Teachers (NUT) in Lagos on Wednesday, Professor Osinbajo emphasised the need for regular training of teachers in order to raise the standard of education in Nigeria.
“One of the basic problems that we have is the fact that we have not continued with education for teachers – teachers training in particular. That is why this consultation is very important. It is only the beginning of the consultations that I intend to have,” he said.
Professor Osinbajo said the administration of the President-elect, General Muhammadu Buhari, is determined to improve the education and health sectors.
“I asked the Governor for this opportunity because of the very great importance that the Buhari administration will place on education.
“In our manifesto, one thing that is very clear is that we are going to spend a lot time and resources on education, especially public education.
“Lagos is the model for what we want to do. For example, we have talked about free education for science, technology engineering and Mathematics and free education at the tertiary level for teachers,” Professor Osinbajo said.
He was elected as the vice president in the March 28 Presidential election. The President-elect, General Buhari defeated the incumbent, President Goodluck Jonathan.
