When Oladapo Olaitan Olaonipekun also known as Dagrin passed on in 2010, many fans of the street rap genre wept bitterly because they felt that his demise had signaled the end of that rare genre of street rap in which Pidgin English, Local language-in this case Yoruba- and English were intricately fused to bring up a most appealing style of music.

But barely 3 years after, talents in that particular genre have sprouted like tendrils and are thrilling fans and critics alike with this most unique genre of Nigerian music.

Among the many rap artistes who have laid claim to the unofficial crown prince of street rap, there are two artistes who have stood out; Phyno and Olamide. Chibuzor Nelson Azubuike otherwise known as Phyno announced his arrival on the scene with the release of his first single, ‘Multiply’ in 2010. Since then, he has shown creative dexterity in the way and manner he dishes out his songs which leaves fans giddy with excitement and drooling for more.

Olamide, on the other hand, is no stranger to street rap genre. From ‘First Of All’, to ‘Eni Duro’, to ‘Ilefo Illuminati’ on to ‘Duro Soke, the Ogun state born superstar has also staked claim to that crown.

Apart from Mode 9, MI, Rugged Man, Jesse Jaggz and Ice Prince, who have hugged the klieg lights of normal rap fused with a smattering of street language, these two artists are neck-to-neck for the unofficial king of street rap. Fans across the land have been divided as to who rocks it better; Olamide or Phyno.
