NSCDC Arrest Two For Electricity Theft

The Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps have arrested two persons for illegal use of electricity for almost two years in the Sagamu Local Government Area of Ogun State.

 The Principal Manager, Public Affairs, Ibadan Electricity Distribution Company, Mr.Tokunbo Peters, on Wednesday, said the suspects were a welder and a battery charger.

“The men are currently in detention and will be charged to court soon,” he said.Peters lamented that illegal connection of electricity had been a major challenge to the IBEDC.

nscdcHe said, “The act has been identified as a major source of leakages and commercial losses to the company making it difficult to account for the full monetary value of the energy received from the market operator.”

He, however, said the new management of the Disco had made it a priority to stamp out the illegal act in the entire area.“The company’s effort to fight energy theft eventually yielded positive results with the arrest of the two men in Sagamu,” Peters said.

While commending the men of the NSCDC for their role in the arrest of the energy thieves, Peters warned local electricians to desist from connecting electricity consumers to its network.Peters also reiterated the company’s commitment to the metering of all the customers under its network.

He said arrangements had been concluded for the mass procurement of split unit prepaid meters that would be deployed in the premises of existing customers presently on estimated billing, as well as new applicants.

He said only the best meters that would efficiently serve the interest of the customers and the company would be deployed across the states.
