Jose Mourinho signs clever pre- contract deal with Manchester United

Reports from the weekend suggest that Jose Mourinho has signed a pre-contract agreement with Manchester United to move to Old Trafford in the summer, however Mourinho has managed to wrangle several safety clauses into the contract.

Though Man Utd reserve the right to withdraw or change their mind, such actions will be costly as the 53-year-old Portuguese coach has been guaranteed $7.2m by May 1st if the Red Devils have not signed the final contract with Mourinho; and if Man Utd still haven’t signed Jose by June 1st, Mourinho will be awarded another $14.4m.

Mourinho could potentially earn $21.6m in compensation by June for not being the right man for the job. Mourinho is the kind of manager who seems to earn just through clever contract deals and reputation alone ,with Chelsea having to still pay the self-appointed ‘chosen one’ $360k per week! This is set to continue until he lands another managerial position. That’s right, sweet Jose could decide to take a long vacation, sipping poncha or ginginha by a pool, and still be earning $360k every week! That is savvy contract negotiations. If Chelsea owner Abramovich wishes to stop paying Mourinho’s vacation money, he would have to pay-out potentially $65.5m to Mourinho.

Jorge Mendes is Mourinho’s agent, and represents a platinum wall of footballing talent. All the talk may be about Mourinho’s potential move to Manchester, but really everyone should be talking about how lethal Jorge Mendes negotiates contracts.

According to El Pais, senior establishment figures at Old Trafford, including Sir Alex Ferguson and Sir Bobby Charlton, are not entirely convinced that Mourinho should succeed Louis van Gaal. As these reports emerge, Van Gaal’s tenure as United chief seems to be written in stone the moment Man Utd can no longer qualify for the Champions League, or are knocked out of the FA Cup.
