A Report on Tuesday has it that President Goodluck Jonathan has nominated Petroleum Minister,  Diezani Alison-Madueke as a contender for Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries, OPEC’s, top job.

The move could end a deadlock between opposing candidates from Saudi Arabia and Iran  for the group’s leadership and make Madueke the first woman to head the organization.

Libyan Abdalla Salem el-Badri, the current secretary-general of OPEC has been due to retire since the end of 2012. He has been the Secretary General since 2007. He is a citizen of Libya and resides in Austria.

He remained in the post after regional rivals Iraq, Saudi Arabia and Iran—each with their own candidate—failed to agree on a new head. Now Nigeria has expressed an interest in joining the fray. OPEC is scheduled to meet on Wednesday.
