The newly created instagram account of British Royals Meghan Markle and Prince Harry broke a world record for the fastest time to gain a million followers in just 6 hours.

The account, named sussexroyal, was set up on Tuesday, April 2 and presently, its number of followers stands at 3.4 million with just two pictures with 1.1million likes and 353likes respectively (correct at the time of writing on April 4, 2019).

The first post on the Instagram page which was uploaded at 20:16 WAT on tuesday, introduced the account as the “Official Instagram for their royal highnesses the Duke and Duchess of Sussex”.

The gallery post also included images of the royal couple together, as well as images of causes the couple are passionate about, including conservation and the British Armed Forces.

The caption reads:

Welcome to our official Instagram; we look forward to sharing the work that drives us, the causes we support, important announcements, and the opportunity to shine a light on key issues. We thank you for your support, and welcome you to @sussexroyal.”- Harry & Meghan.’

The second post’s gallery included only Prince Harry with families and children at a mental health institution.

According to journalist Benjamin Wareing, the rush of followers to the account caused Instagram to crash momentarily due to the unprecedented user volume.

It could be recalled that in May 2018, Meghan deleted all her personal social media accounts ahead of her wedding to Harry making this account her first presence on social media since her marriage to the British royal family.

Before now, the record was broken by 22-year-old Korean pop star, Kang Daniel, who gained 1 million followers in 11 hours 36 minutes – double the amount of time it took Harry and Meghan.

It could also be recalled that before Kang Daniel, the record was held by Pope Francis, who reached 1 million in 12 hours after debuting his verified Vatican Media channel ‘franciscus’ back in 2016.

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex tied the knot in May 2018 and are expecting a baby in a month.
