FCT Minister calls for reform of 30-year laws

Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Muhammad Musa Bello says some of the laws governing the capital city are over thirty years old and are not in conformity with current realities.

He says this is especially the case, in the area of the city’s present demographic composition, adding that the administration would gladly welcome the support of the National Assembly in reviewing some of these laws.

VON reported that Bello was speaking at a meeting with members of the Senate committee on the FCT at the National Assembly in Abuja.

He said added however, that there were excellent laws on the Administration, and when strictly followed, would lessen the burden of managing the territory.

 “Our starting point therefore is that if we must succeed in this enormous task of building the city of our dreams then all officials must follow the laid down rules and regulations”, he added.

Malam Bello expressed optimism that the task of making Abuja a world class would be much easier, given the commitment and focus of members of the committee, stressing that the FCTA would be very responsive to the committee’s oversight functions. 

He assured members of Senate committee on the FCT that he is keen to transform Abuja into a world class city before the expiration of this government.

The minister said Abuja was the ultimate city in Nigeria and a model for Africa which could not afford to be negated.

Bello said that he was determined to improve on the existing facilities and infrastructure in the territory for the benefit of its residents.

The minister also informed the committee that the Administration had already commenced work on some of the challenges highlighted.

The chairman of the Senate Committee on the FCT, Senator Dino Melaye said that the interactive session was an opportunity for the committee to interface with the managers of the territory and to set agenda for the realization of the common goal of making Abuja the pride of all Nigerians.

He assured the Minister that the committee would work closely with him for the actualization of President Muhammadu Buhari’s Change agenda.
