Brazil team celebrates Pele after emphatic win over South Korea

Brazil on Monday set an imperious tone for a team with their sights firmly on a sixth World Cup title as the team a formidable message to their many World Cup rivals with a sensational display against South Korea with four unanswered goals in the first half at Stadium 974 on Monday that booked them a spot in the Qatar 2022 quarter-finals against Croatia.

Neymar was also on duty as he made a grand come-back from injury to help Brazil thump South Korea 4-1 at the blast of the final whistle.

Vinicius Junior, Neymar, Richarlison and Lucas Paqueta all scored first-half goals, with Paik Seung-ho pulling one back for a beleaguered South Korea late on.

They were ahead after seven minutes when Raphinha’s low cross reached Vinicius Jr and he expertly lifted the ball above the charging goalkeeper and three defenders. Five minutes later it was 2-0 with a Neymar penalty and Richarlison added a brilliant third after a spell of juggling then a razor combination with Marquinhos and Thiago Silva that had Brazil’s delirious fans dancing and neutrals everywhere purring.

Lucas Paqueta volleyed in the fourth after 36 minutes and the five-times champions played the second half as an exhibition, denied more goals only by impressive Korean goalkeeper Kim Seung-gyu, as they turned their attention to Friday’s quarter-final meeting with Croatia. Korea worked tirelessly and bravely to try to limit the damage and were rewarded for their own attacking efforts when Paik Seung-ho smashed in a brilliant long-range shot.

After their victory, Brazil’s players carried a banner bearing Pele’s name onto the pitch in support of the 82-year-old football icon, who remains in hospital in Sao Paulo.
