In a protracted lawsuit by Apple against fellow smartphone giant Samsung, a US jury has ordered Samsung to pay Apple a sum of $290m. Apple had requested a damage fee of $380m accusing Samsung of iPhone patent infringement.

Both companies have been slugging it out at the courts for two years, with Apple initially awarded over $1bn last year after it convinced a jury that Samsung copied various iPhone features- like using fingers to pinch and zoom on the screen – along with design touches like the phone’s flat, black glass screen.

In March, a US judge upheld about $600m of that verdict but ordered a retrial on the rest, ruling that the previous jury had made some errors in its calculations. Following the jury’s retrial verdict, Apple has now got a sum of $929.8m in the case.

While appreciating the favourable verdict it got from the court, Apple said the case is not just about money but about innovation and hard work that comes with owning an intellectual property. “It has been about innovation and the hard work that goes into inventing product that people love. While it’s impossible to put a price tag on those values, we are grateful to the jury for showing Samsung that copying has a cost.”

Reacting to the damage cost imposed on it by the court, Samsung said the company won’t give up fighting the decision which it claim is based on an invalid patent, adding that this would not stop the company from its commitment of thrilling its numerous customers around the globe with groundbreaking innovations. “We are disappointed by today’s decision, which is based in large part on a patent that the US Patent and Trademark Office has recently deemed invalid. While we move forward with our post-trial motions and appeals, we will continue to innovate with groundbreaking technologies and great products that are loved by our many customers all around the world, “the company said.
