The Ekiti House of Assembly has summoned officials of the State Sports Council over the ‘embarrassment’ recently caused the state through the ‘shabby outfits’ worn by the athletes during the opening parade of the ongoing Asaba Sports Festival.
This is contained in a statement issued by the Chairman, House Committee on Media and Public Affairs, Mr Babatunde Oke, and made available to newsmen on Sunday in Ado-Ekiti.
Oke, who condemned, in strong terms, the embarrassment caused by the attires put on by the state athletes in Asaba, called on the officials overseeing sports in the state to appear before the House Committee on Youth and Sport on Sept. 26 at 2:00 p.m.
The statement further stated that the summon had become necessary to unravel the circumstances behind the athletes’ poor outfit.
While acknowledged the importance of sports outings to position the positive image of the state, he, however, said that the attire worn by the athletes at the event was not a reflection of the values and standards upheld by the state.
The assembly, therefore, directed the officials concerned to appear before its committee as a proactive measure to guard against future occurrence of the situation.
BRANDPOWER reports that the assembly had recently passed Ekiti State Sports Commission bill into law in its bid to promote and enhance sporting activities in the state.
